Three years of Netmaps

The company Netmaps, dedicated to the creation of digital cartographic content, was created on the Internet in 1997. Netmaps’ digital cartographic products under order have managed to gain a privileged place in the national and international market. Netmaps’ digital maps are present on 3 continents and in more than 25 countries, with notable clients such as Salvat, Planeta, Dinamic Multimedia, etc. Netmaps has grown exponentially in recent months, giving rise to new projects such as MapasGuias (www.mapasguias.com), which combines maps and local businesses, becoming the portals for localities with less than 50,000 inhabitants. This project has already gained a customer base of more than 1200 clients in just six months, and the structure is currently being created for its extension to other regions of Spain. With the entry of new partners, a rapid internationalization of the product is expected. Another noteworthy project, presented at the recent Expodidáctica-2000 Fair in Barcelona, is the Mapas Murales Sopena, created in cooperation with the centennial publishing house Ramón Sopena of Barcelona, and set to be commercially available in early June. The Mapas Murales Sopena are promoted with the slogan “the most traditional cartography with the most modern technology,” and are the result of the technological effort of Netmaps (founded in 1997), combined with the centuries-old quality of Sopena (founded in 1896). In light of these and other ongoing projects, Netmaps has initiated a first round of investments, including several of the country’s main venture capital firms and investment funds, as well as a significant Regional Communications Group for the expansion of Mapas Guías. In addition to these negotiations, Netmaps will participate as a guest on March 27th at the Internet Business Forum in Barcelona. The planned new constitution of Netmaps will consist of a stable core of 40% composed of Communication Groups, which will serve as a product launcher, 30% of venture capital firms to undertake new projects and international projection, 15% of companies with strategic use of cartography, and the rest between the workers and the company’s management.
